What is LLI?
Leveled Literacy Intervention, or LLI, is designed to supplement small-group instruction that children receive in the classroom. LLI is designed for students who find reading and writing difficult.
What is the goal of LLI?
The goal of LLI is to provide small group instruction in reading, writing, and phonics/word study. A group of three students meet daily with the LLI teacher to reinforce new learning and support progress. The lessons are fast paced and targeted to skills that the students need to practice. The lessons move quickly, keeping children engaged.
The focus of reading is comprehending of texts. As the students read the books, the teacher is supporting comprehension and guiding the students. Students learn how to make connections between stories they read and with experiences in their own life. Some book series are included in the LLI system, and students get excited to see favorite characters or series as they move through the lessons.
The focus of writing is the building of early writing strategies. Students learn how to use sounds to build words, recognizing and using spelling patterns, composing sentences, and using writing conventions. The LLI teacher uses a combination of modeling writing where the teacher shows and explains the word choice and sentence composition, shared writing where the group composes sentences together, and independent writing where the students get to practice their new skills.
How can I help my child at home?
Each day, the students will bring home a book on their level to read, words to practice, and a take-home sheet that reviews and reinforces comprehension, phonics skills, and/or writing. Having a family member listen to the student read their book and discuss the book is helpful. Students should be able to complete the take-home sheet with minimal assistance. Each day, a Home Connection sheet is provided, listing additional activities families can do in the home to support reading.“When students have the opportunities to share their success in the home, their self-esteem is enhanced.” (Leveled Literacy Intervention, Program Guide).
Torrence Creek is fortunate to have two certified LLI Coaches, Mrs. Shore and Mrs. Corbett. Mrs. Shore works with Kindergarten and 1st grade students. Mrs. Corbett works with 2nd and 3rd grade students.
